This quick guide answers frequently asked questions about electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) through Surescripts in VieCure. It covers sending a prescription to a pharmacy and what to do when one goes to the wrong pharmacy.
How do I put in a prescription order? (Surescripts process)
- Open the patient's chart and go to Orders, then add the medication.
- Complete the prescription details (sig, quantity, days supply, refills) and select the patient's pharmacy.
- Review the Order Summary and approve the order as the provider (non-providers choose the Ordering Provider and Order Method).
- When the provider approves a non-controlled medication with a pharmacy selected, VieCure sends it electronically to the pharmacy through Surescripts.
- Status — Transmission status is tracked on the order (pending, sent, accepted by pharmacy, or error) so you can see whether the prescription reached the pharmacy.
- Errors — Failed transmissions are reported to the provider or staff, and Surescripts issues create Worklist tasks.
- Controlled substances — Orders for DEA-scheduled drugs (II-V) do not use this path. They are handled by a separate controlled-substance process (DrFirst), and the order form includes a DEA two-factor step for providers.
I sent the correct prescription to the wrong pharmacy - how do I fix it?
Cancel the prescription that went to the wrong pharmacy, then send a new one to the correct pharmacy.
- Open Order History and void or discontinue the prescription (see the Orders guide: "I sent an e-prescription to CVS and it was incorrect, how do I cancel the order so the pharmacy knows not to fill it?"). Void is for entry errors and is limited to the user who approved or entered the order.
- VieCure sends a cancel message to the pharmacy that received it.
- Place a new order with the correct pharmacy and approve it.
- If the wrong pharmacy already dispensed the medication, the cancel is rejected and the case goes to the ePrescribe work queue instead of creating a duplicate prescription.
